What is Boudoir Photography?

What is Boudoir?

OK, so you have been hearing about boudoir photography but not sure what it is. Who should do it? Why? What does is entail?
First thing first….how do you actually pronounce the word?
Boudoir – pronounced  bŏo dwăawr. Boudoir comes from late 18th century French word and is translated as – a woman’s bedroom or a private sitting room. Boudoir photography, therefore, usually takes place in a setting such as a bedroom or a hotel room… an intimate setting to create classy images that can be soft, romantic, sexy, sensual, or naughty. The main focus of a boudoir photographer is to capture you in the most flattering way by guiding you through the poses that compliment your body type.
Boudoir photography is a photographic style featuring intimate, romantic, and sometimes erotic images of its subjects, primarily intended for the private enjoyment of the subject and their romantic partners. It is distinct from glamour and art nude photography in that it is usually more suggestive or implied rather than explicit in its approach to nudity, featuring people who do not regularly model, and produces images which are not intended to be seen by a wide audience, but rather to remain under the control of the person photographed.
It is common for women to have boudoir photographs of themselves made as a gift to a partner, conventionally on the occasion of their engagement, marriage, or before a separation such as a military deployment. Boudoir photography is also sometimes given as a gift with the intention of re-affirming and encouraging the romance and sensuality between partners in a long-term relationship. Other Motivations or inspiration for boudoir photography shoots include anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine's Day, weight loss regimes, other form of body change or alteration (such as breast augmentation or reduction.
Increasingly, boudoir photography is seen as something that a person might do purely for their own enjoyment, for the pleasure and affirmation of seeing themselves as attractive, daring, sensual, and sexually-desirable.
Typically shot in a photographer's private studio or luxury hotel suites, it has become fashionable to create a set of sensual or sexually suggestive images of women (and occasionally men and couples) in "boudoir style". The most common manifestation of contemporary boudoir photography is to take variations of candid and posed photographs of the person partly clothed or in lingerie.
Boudoir photography may, in some cases, be distinguished from other photography genres such as glamour photography, fine art nude photography and erotic photography.
Wardrobe can be anything you can imagine as sexy. A man's button up shirt or a sports jersery. Bra/panty sets, lingerie, and lace robes are perfect as well. Add props. A favorite hat. A lace fan. Maybe something a little kinky like a whip or handcuffs and a blindfold. How about a maid's costume or your favorite superhero? The limit is your imagination!
